Symptoms of Penile Cancer

Although it is very rare, it is important to know the most common symptoms of penile cancer. Penile cancer is most common in uncircumcised men over the age of forty. It is also more common in men with the herpes virus or human papillomavirus. If penile cancer is detected early, the chance of survival is high.

A growth on the penis

Painless growths or sores on the penis are a symptom of penile cancer. These growths are most often located on the glands or foreskin. At times the foreskin may cover these growths, so it is important to examine underneath the foreskin.

Discharge from the penis

A foul smelling discharge under the foreskin is another symptom. This discharge is persistent and has a distinctive odor.

A rash or change in the color of the penis

A red rash is an indicator of possible penile cancer. This rash has a velvety or scaly texture and is often painless.

Swollen groin lymph nodes

About half of the individuals with penile cancer have swollen lymph nodes at the time of diagnosis. However, only about half of those individuals' swollen lymph notes actually relate to a tumor. The other half of individuals with swollen lymph nodes have swelling as a result of infection related to the bumps and lesions discussed above.

If you have any of the above symptoms, see your doctor as soon as possible. Penile cancer is rare, but only your doctor can determine whether cancer is the cause of your symptoms.
