Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer symptoms often do not develop until the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. This situation makes pancreatic cancer one of the most difficult cancers to find and treat quickly. However, there are symptoms you can be aware of in hopes of detecting the cancer early.

Adenocarcinoma pancreatic cancer symptoms

The most prevalent type of pancreatic cancer is of the adenocarcinoma variety, which means it is located in the exocrine glands. This type of cancer commonly causes bloating, gas pains, weight loss and other gastrointestinal issues. Since the cancer blocks the bile ducts, you may also experience yellowing of the skin, which is called jaundice. The blocked ducts may also lead to itching skin and pale stools.

Less common pancreatic cancer symptoms

Rarer forms of pancreatic cancer, such as those that develop in the islet cells, can lead to excess insulin being produced in your body. Surplus insulin can show itself in dizziness, weight loss and other symptoms. These rarer types of pancreatic cancer usually alter hormones within your body, which leads to more hormonal disturbances arising.

Early pancreatic symptoms can lead to early detection

Most patients with pancreatic cancer have symptoms only after the cancer has spread; however, a small percentage will experience early symptoms. For example, you may experience a loss of appetite months before any other symptoms develop, or you may find yourself suddenly being disgusted by tastes you once enjoyed. Attacks of acute pancreatitis can also signal the start of pancreatic cancer in some patients. All of these symptoms typically develop months before the other, more typical symptoms start, which means you have a better chance of detecting the cancer in its early stages.

Pancreatic cancer is a difficult cancer to diagnose in the early stages. By being aware of the possible symptoms of this cancer, you can help increase the chances of its being caught before it spreads throughout your body.
