Peripheral Neuropathy
Key Points/Overview

Peripheral nerves are those nerves located outside the brain and the spinal cord. There are two different types of peripheral nerves: sensory and motor. Sensory nerve fibers are responsible for carrying different sensations to the brain for their interpretation. The different sensations include pain, touch, temperature, position, and vibration. Motor nerve fibers help you move and maintain muscle tone. These two types of peripheral nerves work with one another. To help you understand how the sensory and motor peripheral nerves work with each, imagine if you put your hand on a hot stove. The extreme temperature is sensed by the sensory peripheral nerves responsible for sensing temperature. The sensation of heat would travel up this type of nerve to your brain, where your brain processes the sensation of heat. The brain then sends a message through the motor peripheral nerves to move your hand off the hot stove.
