Pain
What is Pain?

The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage." 4

Types of Pain

Acute Pain is usually very painful, but lasts only a short time. This is generally a message that the body tissue has been damaged, the pain generally goes away as healing occurs. 4 Chronic Pain may be mild or severe and is present for long periods of time. 4 People with chronic pain that is controlled by medications may have what is known as breakthrough pain. This can happen when pain increases or "breaks through" due to movement or for other reasons. This type of pain may occur even when the right dose of medicine is given.
