About Cancer Pain

Pain is one of the most feared side effects of cancer for patients and their caregivers. Approximately two thirds of patients will have pain at some point during their diagnosis. 4 It is important for patients to understand that pain relief is an important part of their care and that cancer pain can be relieved. Pain relief is an important part of the patient's care. Pain that is not relieved can interfere with your ability to sleep, eat and have quality time with family and friends.

Pain can be relieved most of the time by medications that are taken by mouth.

You are the only one who knows about your pain level. Unfortunately, we cannot tell by looking at you whether you are having pain or not. It is very important for you to be honest with the health care professionals involved in your care when talking about your pain. Do not be afraid to talk with them, even if your pain is unrelieved.

Pain may be caused by the following in people with cancer:

  1. Tumor involvement: tumor may press against nerves or organs; cancer has spread to other areas of the body.

  2. Cancer related procedures and treatment effects: biopsy procedures, surgery, nerve damage related to chemotherapy

  3. Causes unrelated to cancer: this includes things such as low back pain, diabetic neuropathies and rheumatoid arthritis. 7
