Mucositis Mucositis is a common side effect of cancer chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In the past the terms mucositis and stomatitis have been used for this side effect. Now, the term mucositis is used to mean inflammation of the mucosal membranes (inside lining) of the mouth. The soft tissues of the mouth may become sensitive, irritated and bleed. If the problem extends to the back of the throat and esophagus you may experience difficulty swallowing. Esophagitis is the term used when the esophagus is involved. The term stomatitis is being used when the inflammation involves not only the mucous membranes, but can also include the other tissues in the mouth including those supporting the teeth. 9 |
