Fatigue From Cancer Treatment

Fatigue from cancer treatment is a common side effect that many patients notice. Symptoms of fatigue include feeling tired, weak, listless and exhausted.
Why you feel fatigued
Fatigue usually occurs along with cancer treatment because many of your healthy cells are destroyed along with cancer cells. Your body then has to work at repairing the healthy cells, which can seriously drain your energy. Fatigue is mainly a side effect of chemotherapy or radiation. Sometimes other side effects, such as nausea, anemia and pain, can also cause fatigue. A major reason for this is that your body is worn down from the other factors and you are not able to regenerate energy as quickly.
When fatigue is a problem
For most patients, some fatigue as a result of cancer treatment is normal and not a cause for real concern. Your physician should receive notification if the fatigue lasts for over a week or interferes with your ability to go about your usual routine. Alert your doctor immediately if you have chest pain while also feeling fatigued.
How to cope
The best way to cope with fatigue is to try to limit your daily activities. By taking it easy and relaxing, you minimize the chance of getting overly fatigued. Eating regular meals can also help alleviate fatigue, as can regular exercise.
Fatigue is one of the most common side effects for patients undergoing different cancer treatments. While this can vary from major fatigue to an occasional tired feeling, consult your physician if fatigue impacts your daily life.
