Dyspnea Dyspnea has cognitive and emotional components. Therefore it is important to address these components when developing a plan of care. Some activities that have shown value in treating dyspnea have included breathing control, activity pacing, guided imagery and relaxation techniques. Psychosocial support is also important and involving many healthcare provider team members such as psychology, music therapy, shiatsu massage and pastoral care can help you and your family to cope with this stressful symptom. Studies have shown several complementary and alternative therapies to be beneficial in treating dyspnea, including acupuncture, acupressure and progressive muscle relaxation/breathing retraining. Talk to your healthcare provider about some of these alternative therapies, if you think that they might be helpful for you. Comfortable positioning, distraction, open windows and fans can all help to relieve dyspnea in some people. |
